Iowa weather

Iowa sits in the middle of one of the most active severe-weather regions in the country. Spring and summer thunderstorms bring hail and straight-line winds, and occasionally a derecho, a long-lived windstorm that can damage buildings across a wide swath of the state in a single day, as Iowa saw in August 2020. Winters add snow load, ice and freeze-thaw. Roofs and outbuildings here often take more than one storm before anyone gets a close look at them.

What we see on Iowa properties

Farm properties are a big part of the picture: steel-roofed machine sheds, pole buildings, shops and barns, often several on one site, alongside the farmhouse. In towns, asphalt shingle homes of every age, older brick storefronts with low-slope roofs behind their parapets, churches and community buildings. Metal roofs and panels show hail differently than shingles do, and we document both by building and by slope.

Metal buildings and timing on the farm

On steel roofs and wall panels, hail can leave dents, crush ribs and loosen or damage fasteners and sealant. We document each of those by building and by elevation, note conditions that were there before the storm, and write down whether panels, trim and fasteners appear to be doing their job. What any of that means for a claim is a question for your carrier, not us. We also know that a farmstead runs on its own calendar, so we schedule inspections and work around planting, harvest and livestock instead of the other way around.

How we work in Iowa

After a storm, the most useful thing is a record made while the evidence is fresh. We walk each building, photograph and measure what we find, and give you a written record before any quote. If you choose to file a claim, we work with your adjuster at your request. We do not interpret policies, advise on coverage or negotiate claims, and we never waive any part of a deductible.

Request an inspection

The inspection costs you nothing. The record is yours whether or not you hire us.
